Primera Air collapses: Thousands are left stranded

After 14 years of operations, budget Nordic airline, Primera Air, has collapsed leaving thousands stranded abroad, and devastating holiday plans for many others.

On Monday evening, the airline broke the news that they were ceasing all operations, leaving two flights from Stansted (due to depart) grounded. The airline said it was “sad” that “several unforeseen misfortunate events” had affected its financial position, leading to the collapse.

The British Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have insisted that they will “not intervene” on bringing UK passengers home, as the airline was not covered by the Atol protection scheme. They advised any stranded passengers to contact their travel insurer or travel agent for further assistance. It’s also reported that cabin crew are amongst those stranded abroad.

For anyone due to travel in the coming weeks, it’s advised to contact Primera Air directly for a refund. The CAA added, “Passengers who booked directly with the company via either a credit, charge or debit card may alternatively be able to make a claim against their card provider.”

The airline announced a statement on their website, saying, “On behalf of Primera Air team, we would like to thank you for your loyalty. On this sad day we are saying goodbye to all of you.”

During it’s time operating, the airline grew to a fleet of 15 aircraft and flying to destinations including New York, Washington and Malaga, from London Stansted and Birmingham. Stansted have issued a statement advising Primera Air passengers to, “not travel to the airport, and contact the airline direct for the latest information regarding their flight.”

Disappointed passengers have vented their feelings towards the Press Association. Tara and Remy Noe claimed to be “in shock” over the news, saying “you can’t contact them, they have shut down the phone lines and the website is inaccessible. Everything is shut down, you can’t get anywhere.”
