The MOD needs an experienced aerospace design engineer to work within a small civilian design team at Royal Air Force Wittering. The work is varied, and you could find yourself working on anything from modern aircraft such as the Hawk, Typhoon or P8A to the historic aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
Our design engineers produce aircraft structural repair design schemes and In-Service Design Changes for fixed wing military aircraft. Your designs may be for the repair of metallic or composite structures, structural modifications of a minor nature which may include the use of additive manufactured components or could be ad-hoc draughting tasks. You will need to substantiate your designs with supporting calculations and all work is necessarily checked for accuracy. Experienced designers who meet the essential criteria may be nominated as check signatories which attracts a market skills allowance of £ 3000.00 per year or as a Compliance Verification Engineer or Stress Note Signatory which will attract a market skills allowance of £ 5000.00 per year. The work requires travel to remote sites to carry out aircraft design surveys including measurements and photography, and this may require overnight stay. During your work you will liaise with aircraft delivery teams, repair teams, non-destructive test teams, external design organisations, manufacturers and suppliers. Depending upon experience you may need to attend mandatory training courses at various locations throughout the UK. You will work 37 hours per week as part of our flexible and hybrid working schemes and may also be eligible to apply for compressed working hours. If you would like to find out more, please contact the Design Team Leader via the link below or go ahead and apply on the CS Jobs website.
The ideal candidate will have experience in either a DAOS approved or EASA Part 21(J) Design Organisation, but this is not essential. The required skills are as follows:
1. You will have either:
• A minimum of three years’ experience as an aerospace design engineer in aircraft structural repair, modification or stress analysis with the necessary computer aided design skills or;
• A minimum of three years’ experience in aircraft repair or modification installation with the necessary Computer Aided Design (CAD) skills.
2. Experience of CAD systems such as AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor with the ability to produce detail drawings to meet the requirements of BS 8888. Experience will be verified by CAD assessment following the interview. The CAD assessment will gauge the candidate’s ability to produce a 3D solid model and extract 2D views using Autodesk Inventor.
3. An understanding of aircraft structural loads, materials and structural failure.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA (Not Essential)
1. Experience of aircraft stress analysis in relation to aircraft structural repairs or modifications.
2. Experience of aircraft composite repair design.
3. Experience in the use of 3D scanning software and printing.
4. Experience in the design of additive manufactured parts.
5. understanding of military and civil airworthiness requirements.
6. Understanding of the air system document set.
7. Experience of finite element analysis tools such as FEMAP or Nastran/Patran.
8. Microsoft office skills.
The minimum requirement is an aerospace based HNC but candidates with higher level qualifications such as HNC, HND. degree etc in aerospace-based subjects are welcome to apply.

Airworthiness engineers, as a part of aircraft safety, work to ensure that an aircraft is fit to fly before its flight. They also check if the said aircraft is in compliance with all the aviation safety regulations. The Airworthiness Engineer job description involves working from an aerodrome where you deal with different aircrafts and the related software systems that test for airworthiness.
Airworthiness engineer jobs offer a somewhat wide range of salaries to different individuals on different basis. Such a difference in pay scale could be on the basis of skill level, geographical region, and the rank of the airworthiness engineer. The average salary tends to be a good five-digit number, an amount that is satisfactory for most individuals.
Airworthiness jobs have many different aspects to them, the most important of which is the inspection of different parts of different airborne equipment, to make sure that a given aircraft is fully fit to fly in the different airspaces of the world. Airworthiness engineers also deal with all the different softwares that facilitate them in their job.
In order to avail airworthiness opportunities for jobs, the aspirants are required to have a certain educational background. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required for airworthiness engineer jobs, in any of the relevant engineering fields. Some educational institutions offer an additional master’s degree in airworthiness engineering.
There are many different criteria to determine an aircraft’s airworthiness. These differ from one equipment to another, and from one region to the other. Airworthiness engineers work to meet the two most essential criteria: the authorised modifications and the conformity of an aircraft to its type certificate. Check out the newly posted job listings on Aviation Job Search.
In the most simplest of terms airworthiness engineers are mainly responsible for organizing, planning, conducting, and successfully ensuring that the aircraft complies with its type certificate and any authorized modifications.
Although it is tempting to think that the airworthiness engineer is responsible for maintaining an aircraft's airworthiness, In many places, the owner or business operator of the aircraft is the primary one responsible.
Airworthiness is the ability to fly an aircraft in a safe manner. It refers to whether it was designed with engineering rigor and constructed to a high standard.
Well, besides getting a degree in aviation engineering, there are other certifications and licenses from various organizations, depending on where you are (EASA, CAA, FAA, etc.), that are required for you to be considered for the post of an airworthiness engineer.
A certificate of airworthiness certifies that an aircraft is safe. You can sell your aircraft or offer commercial transport services. Without an airworthiness certificate, potential buyers and customers will see your aircraft as unsafe, and they will move their business elsewhere.
Airworthiness engineers guarantee that airplanes are fit to fly and consent to all the important flying guidelines. This is a difficult and intriguing position, which normally includes working in an aerodrome. These specialists manage airplane and related programming frameworks that test for airworthiness consistently. In order to perform a job of this magnitude, any aspiring individual is demanded to have an in-depth analysis and insight into aircraft workings, the design and structure of different aircrafts, and aerodynamic controls. For building established airworthiness careers, some highly expert airworthiness engineers also deal with highly sophisticated computer systems, and understand their operation. You can find the airworthiness jobs on Aviation Job Search portal.
The airworthiness engineers use the design templates and drawings provided by the aircraft designers and give a verdict on their feasibility. They are responsible for undertaking detailed airworthiness assessment that helps in the development of design. Based on their recommendations, the modifications are made in the aircraft structure to be worthy of flying. They are technically sound and know how to operate the airworthiness equipment and ensure aircraft safety. After conducting the analysis, they generate detailed reports. During the analysis, they inspect aircraft according to the safety regulations. They also test aircraft equipment to see whether they are working at full potential.
Before applying for airworthiness vacancies, aspirants should keep in mind that they are well equipped with all the necessary skills and attributes that are required in airworthiness engineering. Skills like problem solving and critical thinking are used every minute during an airworthiness engineer’s career. One must have a comprehensive knowledge about the normal workings of an aircraft, so as to detect any malfunction or deviation from its normal functioning. The engineer must also demonstrate the ability to suspect any deviation from aviation safety rules and regulations, and to be able to rectify those faults imminently, so the aircraft works safely at its fullest potential.
Most airworthiness engineers work indoors, such as in hangars. They may also work outdoors, depending on weather conditions and when hangars are full. They must work quickly and accurately to keep passengers and flight schedules from being disrupted. Their job is to check the aircraft and carry out maintenance work for the aircraft to be able to fly safely. They must lift or pull heavy objects. They may also have to work in awkward or unstable positions. Engineers must constantly be exposed to vibrations and sounds in order to test engines. At least 40 hours per week are required of airworthiness engineers. They are required to work overtime because problems can sometimes occur outside of normal working hours.
