SUMMARY

The Avionics Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and supporting electronic systems used in aircraft, spacecraft, and related systems. This role ensures the safe and efficient operation of communication, navigation, and flight control systems through technical expertise, system integration, and compliance with aerospace regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Design and develop avionics systems, including communication, navigation, radar, and flight control systems.
  • Conduct system integration, troubleshooting, and validation for new and modified aircraft.
  • Generate detailed technical drawings, specifications, and system documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., FAA, EASA, MIL-STD).
  • Participate in system testing, verification, and certification activities.
  • Support production, testing, and maintenance teams with technical expertise.
  • Review and interpret customer specifications and translate them into engineering requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including software, mechanical, and electrical engineers.
  • Assist with failure analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Stay updated with emerging avionics technologies and industry best practices.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE

  • Principles of avionics systems and aerospace electronic components.
  • Communication protocols (e.g., ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553, CAN Bus).
  • Navigation and control systems (e.g., GPS, ILS, autopilot systems).
  • Regulatory standards (e.g., DO-178, DO-254, DO-160, RTCA, FAA Part 23/25).
  • Testing and troubleshooting tools and techniques.
  • System engineering lifecycle and project management fundamentals.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Avionics Engineering, or a related technical field required.
  • Master’s degree preferred but not required.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., FAA DER credentials, IPC certification) are a plus.
  • 3–5 years of experience in avionics engineering, aerospace systems, or related fields.
  • Hands-on experience with avionics integration, testing, and certification preferred.
  • Background in system design, system validation, and troubleshooting.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Office setting with frequent visits to laboratory and manufacturing areas.
  • Occasional travel to customer sites, vendors, or testing facilities.
  • Collaboration in team-based and project-driven environments.
  • Exposure to aerospace production environments, including clean rooms or flight line operations.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity for working with fine instruments, wiring, and small components.
  • Occasional lifting of equipment up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders or access confined spaces within aircraft during inspections or installations.
  • Visual acuity to read detailed schematics and technical documentation.

WORK AUTHORIZATION/SECURITY CLEARANCE

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • If a Security Clearance is required:
    • Candidates "must/may need" to be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance
    • Successful candidates must be able to secure Program Access approval
