Position:                      R&D Experimental Aircraft Technician
Reports To:                 Director of Engineering
Status:                         Non-Exempt
Wage Range:              $20 - $40 / Hour
           
BASIC WORKER FUNCTION:
Support the R&D team by building, modifying, and maintaining experimental and prototype aircraft. Work combines aircraft maintenance, prototyping, machining, and avionics integration to help with design and flight testing.
 
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF TASKS:
• Maintain, inspect, and repair experimental aircraft following engineering instructions.
• Assist engineers with flight test instruments, sensors, and electrical systems installation.
• Fabricate parts, fixtures, and assemblies using machining, welding, and composites.
• Support prototype assembly, teardown, and configuration changes during testing.
• Keep detailed records of maintenance, modifications, and inspections.
• Help with ground runs, system checks, and pre-flight preparations.
• Work closely with engineers, mechanics, and avionics technicians to solve technical issues.
• Maintain safety and a clean, organized work environment following company policies.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Working knowledge of aircraft systems, including structures, powerplant, and basic electrical systems
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and maintenance manuals
• Hands-on mechanical aptitude with experience using common shop and aircraft maintenance tools
• Basic troubleshooting skills for mechanical and electrical systems
• Experience with fabrication and assembly (machining, drilling, fitting, etc.)
• Ability to use precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.)
• Strong attention to detail with a focus on safety and quality
• Ability to document work clearly and follow written and verbal instructions
• Strong problem-solving skills in a fast-paced, experimental environment
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team
 
QUALIFICATIONS
• FAA A&P certificate preferred at hire; required within 6 months.
• 3+ years’ experience in aircraft maintenance, prototyping, or experimental flight testing preferred.
• Strong mechanical skills and ability to read engineering drawings and schematics.
• Experience with machine shop tools (lathe, mill, band saw) and fabrication methods.
• Knowledge of aircraft electrical systems and troubleshooting preferred.
• Familiarity with experimental aircraft procedures and 14 CFR Part 21/43 is a plus.
• Able to adapt to changing project priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Lift up to 50 lbs and work in confined or elevated spaces.
• Comfortable working around active aircraft, including during engine runs and system tests.
