Description of Work

The North Carolina Forest Service is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, emergency response, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs.  The NC Forest Service provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina.


The NCFS Aviation Division is responsible for fire detection and suppression, airborne pest control detection, water quality, hazard reduction burning, and other supporting flights.

The primary purpose of the NCFS Maintenance Organization is to Maintain the Division’s aircraft and serve on the flight crew to assist in wildfire suppression.


Residency requirement - Must reside within one hour of required duty station.  

Duty Station Location:  Sanford Hangar, 709 Rod Sullivan Road,  Sanford, NC  27330

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of fixed and rotary aircraft and their repair, turbine engine repair, single and multi-engine application, and hydraulic systems.
  • Computer experience necessary for electronic Airworthiness (AD) and (Service Bulletins (SB) search and maintenance tracking system.
  • Working knowledge of FARs pertaining to maintenance and logbook sign off.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform testing and checks on all aircraft components and system required by maintenance manuals.
  • Ability to travel away from home duty station for extended periods of time and work in outdoor environments.
  • Must have or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment, a NC Driver's license.

Must hold FAA certification as an Airframe and Power plant Mechanic

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

  • Experience maintaining General Aviation fixed wing aircraft.
  • Experience as a helicopter Crew Chief.
  • Experience maintaining UH1-H or similar aircraft.

FAA issued Inspection Authorization and history or performance of Inspector Authorization (IA) duties.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.


Graduation from an FAA approved aviation maintenance technician school and one year of experience in aircraft inspection, maintenance and repair; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 

Necessary Special Requirements Possession of valid Federal Aviation Administration Airframe and Powerplant license. May require current certification by the EPA as a type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by CFR part 82, subpart F.
