Overview

This Specialist Engineer technical lead position supports Aerojet Rocketdyne’s Mission Architecture and Analysis group in Huntsville, Alabama. The Specialist Engineer leads and generates advanced designs, conducts performance analyses, leads peer reviews, and plans and coordinates conceptual design trades for advanced solid rocket propulsion concepts. The individual works closely with business development and program management leadership in our Defense Advanced Programs organization. Provides innovative and technically sound solutions to a wide range of engineering problems in a dynamic and diverse aerospace environment. Works within integrated product teams to formulate strategies and conduct necessary studies and trades in support of proposal activities and advanced systems development. Supports product development risk mitigation planning along with associated testing requirements.

This position may be filled at the level posted or at the next higher level.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Working with minimal direction:

25% - Leads Mission Architecture solid rocket motor propulsion projects. Prepares and delivers results in oral presentations and/or written documents. Provides guidance and direction to less experienced engineers on the team. Supports engineering continuous improvement initiatives such as tool enhancements and process improvements.

75% - Identifies, evaluates, and provides creative and practical solutions to a wide range of solid rocket motor propulsion problems requiring the use of engineering design and analysis methods and tools. Works on assignments requiring broad knowledge of solid propulsion systems and in-depth knowledge of principles and practices within the solid rocket propulsion development community. Conducts advanced conceptual/ preliminary system design and leads engineering teams to analyze and mature preferred design configurations. Conceives and plans projects involving the development of existing and new programs that address technical objectives. Leads the planning and conduct of system studies, design requirements, development testing, and design reviews. Defines systems requirements and determines applicable validation methods for compliance and verification. Participates in technical proposals describing design approach, relevant heritage, risk assessment and mitigation planning, and rationale with estimated cost and schedule.

Requirements

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Aeronautical Engineering or appropriate discipline and at least 9 years of directly related technical experience in solid propulsion design engineering disciplines or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

Additional Requirements and Preferred Qualifications:

* Expertise in the design, analysis and/or testing of solid propulsion required.
* Working knowledge of CAD tools (PTC Creo).
* Working knowledge of Ballistics Analysis.
* Experience in using any of several programming languages (Matlab, C, C#, Python, FORTRAN, etc.) is desired.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit and to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 15 pounds; may require minimal walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
