Job Title: SENIOR STRESS & DESIGN ENGINEER

JOB PURPOSE

 

BAE Systems is the UK Government’s nominated Prime Contractor (PC) under the Government-to-Government arrangements that are in place to provide equipment, support and training to Saudi Arabia.  We provide maintenance of Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) aircraft and train RSAF personnel safely in a training environment in how to use their aircraft, equipment and weapons. For such maintenance and training, this role a technical specialist in the design and stress aspects of structural repairs undertaken on different aircraft types (e.g. Tornado, Hawk, etc) operating within the RSAF fleet.  The Senior Stress & Design Engineer is expected to develop repair solutions that maintain the structural integrity of the aircraft and are carried out to the standard procedures required by the Design Authority which requires knowledge and experience of aircraft design, processes and procedures involved. As a technical specialist with aspects of aircraft stress and design, the Senior Stress and Design Engineer will be expected to provide appropriate advice, training and coaching to other RSAF Engineers working with the Aeronautical Engineering Squadron

 

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Ensure that methods and data used for repairs completed in Kingdom are compatible with those necessary to maintain the structural integrity of the aircraft and respect the standard procedures of the Design Authority.

  • Identify those aircraft repairs that need referral to the Design Authority and cannot be dealt with in-Kingdom and ensure liaison between the Design Authority and RSAF Aeronautical Engineering staff in progressing repair work.

  • Undertake damage assessments on behalf of the RSAF in order to establish the extent of repair action required.

  • Provide advice and assistance during the embodiment of aircraft and A.G.E. structural modifications.

  • Provide structural engineering assistance to aircraft Incident and Accident investigations.

  • Investigate and make recommendations on inspection schedules / maintenance requirements etc. for recurring structural problems.

  • Prepare and draft briefs for the RSAF to be presented to MODSAP, the Prime Contractor and vendors at formal and informal meetings.

  • Provide RSAF Officer structural familiarisation training both informally and in a formal classroom situation, including the preparation and delivery of instruction that will ultimately lead to the award of a certificate of completion for the AES Engineers involved.

  • The Job Holder will have, or be at a level suitable to hold, Design Authority signature for structural repairs not affecting primary structure.  For primary structure repairs these are to be done in conjunction with the appropriate aircraft Design Authority.  In some instances he may advise of the necessity to call on the full manning and resources of the BAE Systems Stress and Design Offices

  • Responsible for assessing the extent of damage sustained in an incident and for identifying any checks required in the search for hidden damage.

RECRUITMENT SPECIFICATION

  • Honours Degree in Structures related discipline (Aeronautical, Mechanical, etc)
  • Have practical experience in aircraft stress and structural design engineer

  • The Senior Stress & Design Engineer must be able to demonstrate that they have knowledge and experience in aircraft stress and aircraft structural design.

  • Have a level of knowledge and experience with the requirements to hold a stress and structural design signatory.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to analyse problems and formulate solutions to new issues that are outside the scope of approved procedures, but which respect the design philosophy of the aircraft types

  • Ability to be able to produce high quality drawings and repair instructions for technicians to follow in the repair of aircraft and A.G.E. using AutoCAD drawing package or similar. 

Desirable

 

 

  • Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartered Engineer status
  • To have complete a recognised course in aircraft engineering or related engineering discipline at a military or civilian school of technical training, and / or have completed an appropriated apprenticeship

  • The candidate will have working knowledge of Tornado, Hawk and / or other aircraft types used by the RSAF.

  • The candidate may have held previously a stress and/or design signature for repairs not affecting the primary structure. For primary structure repairs these are handled in conjunction with the Design Authority.
