Managing Director of Labor and Employment Law

POSITION INFORMATION

Role Summary
The in-house legal team works in a 'shared services' environment. Employed by Alaska Airlines, the attorneys provide legal services for Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, and Alaska Air Group. The individual in this role handles employment law advice and counseling and other tasks involving legal risk management for Alaska Air Group (AAG) and its subsidiaries.

Key Duties

*

Provides employment law compliance advice to AAG and its subsidiaries, focusing on enterprise-wide compliance initiatives, including initiatives related to diversity and inclusion, compensation and pay equity, employee benefits, leaves, employment-related aspects of government contracts, and investigations.

*

Provides day-to-day legal advice and guidance regarding all aspects of the employee/employer relationship on topics such as employment discrimination and harassment, medical and disability leaves of absence, benefits, recruiting, drug testing, background checks, wage and hour.

*

Provides legal guidance to HR regarding compliance with employment regulations, such as FMLA, ADA, ADEA, and USERRA.

*

Advises on discipline and performance-related matters, and reviews recommendations for termination or reductions in force concerning Alaska Airlines' non-union employees. May be called upon to oversee outside counsel with respect to employee litigation.

*

Conducts legal research and analysis and investigates matters bearing on employment law matters.

*

Provides legal advice and counseling during times of potential internal or public relations crises.

*

Represents AAG companies in inquiries from state and federal agencies, including the Department of Labor, the EEOC, and other state and local EEO and labor agencies.

*

Drafts, reviews, and negotiates contracts, letter agreements, and settlement agreements related to pre-litigation legal disputes and may be called upon to do the same with respect to active litigation.

*

Coordinates with other in-house lawyers handling labor and employment law matters to establish common expectations with law firms, realize economies, and keep the Vice President (VP) Legal & General Counsel, the Managing Director (MD) of Labor & Employment Law, and other executives abreast of legal exposure.

*

Manages outside legal counsel, including managing budgets. Travels for client matters and to industry-related legal conferences

Job-Specific Skills & Education
Required

*

Licensed attorney in good standing, preferably licensed in California or Washington State.

*

A minimum of 10 years' experience as a practicing attorney in employment law advice and counseling or employment litigation in a company or law firm setting.

*

A thorough familiarity with various employment laws related to compensation, pay equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives, paid and unpaid leaves, and OFCCP and EEOC reporting requirements.

*

A minimum of 5 years' experience providing advice and counsel to employers who operate in multiple states and who face a 'patchwork' of state and local employment laws.

*

History of direct, frequent interaction with corporate clients.

*

Resourceful, able to drive projects and initiatives to conclusion, and comfortable providing legal advice in ambiguous situations.

*

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

*

Excellent planning and organizational skills.

*

Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines in fast-paced environment where flexibility is key.

*

Strong interpersonal skills.

*

Juris Doctor degree from leading school, with strong personal academic credentials.

*

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

*

Minimum age of 18.

*

Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

*

Experience as in-house counsel for a company.

*

Knowledge of ERISA and ability to provide advice related to employee benefits plans.

*

Knowledge of California employment laws.
