Quality Engineer

General Summary:

The Quality Engineer I is responsible to perform the job duties listed within including the application of engineering theory and principles to problems in manufacturing and production.  The employee may study and record the time, motion, method, and speed involved in performance of production operations for such purposes as establishing standard production rates, improving efficiency, and designing effective quality assurance operating procedures. The employee may be assigned to system level processes or specific customer related assignments.  The skills of the Quality Engineer must be of the highest caliber and on a level consistent with those employees doing similar work employed at similar operations.  Productivity, efficiency, and minimal waste are critical elements of daily operational work for this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interpret engineering drawings, schematic diagrams, or formulas and confer with management or engineering staff to determine quality and reliability standards and associated documentation.
  • Monitor and recommend modifications to existing quality or production standards, procedures, processes, or documentation to achieve optimum quality.
  • Evaluate data and write reports to validate or indicate deviations from existing standards.
  • Prepare graphs or charts of data or enter data into computer for analysis.
  • Record data applying statistical quality control procedures.
  • Compile and evaluate statistical data to determine and maintain quality and reliability of products.
  • Work with customer representatives to address nonconformance/MRB activity and corrective actions.
  • Aid in planning work assignments in accordance with worker performance, machine capacity, production schedules, or anticipated delays.
  • Confirm that all standard operating procedures are being completed. Confirm that all operations comply with all state and federal laws for safety and labor compliance.
  • Perform system internal audits to assess the health of the company Quality Management System.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or related to position.
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and implementation of processes and procedures for various goods and services.
  • Advanced knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
  • Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Identifies complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Understands written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Ability to consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Identifies measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system.
  • Understanding of gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly or product is conforming to requirements.
  • Determines the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Frequent computer keyboard and monitor use while sitting to perform desk-related work for extended periods of time using finger dexterity and vision.
  • Frequent walking, grasping, reaching, bending, carrying, and potential lifting (up to 50 lbs).
  • Position may require employee to be available to work over 12 hours a day and 7 days a week depending on the Company production requirements.
  • Strong psychological stamina to work under pressure to meet deadlines without omissions or errors.
  • Interface productively with all employees, customers, and contractors.

The Quality Engineer position works a portion of their time in an office environment, utilizing computers and printed data to perform intellectual work.  The office environment is typically quiet with ambient temperatures that are normally controlled by heater units or A/C units.  The Quality Engineer also works a portion of their time working in the manufacturing production environment or quality production areas.  The production floor may be noisy or dusty and have materials such as metal shavings on the floor with ambient temperatures that are warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter.  Designated Quality Control rooms have controlled temperatures at all times.  Quality Engineers may sit at a keyboard for long periods of time and may work in a time-sensitive environment related to product completion resulting in a demanding and fast paced production environment.  Employees may work on different shifts and those shifts/hours may change or fluctuate due to production demands.


  • Education: BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field and/or equivalent years of experience.
  • License/Certification: None required.
  • Experience: 1 Year experience working in the Quality Department

Pay Transparency

The salary information is a general guideline only. A wide range of factors are considered when extending an offer, such as job-related knowledge and skills, qualifications, education/training, key skills as well as market and business considerations.  Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered. 

California pay range
$80,000$90,000 USD
