Job Purpose

A Leading Defence engineering client are seeking EXPERIENCED Production Team Leader/Supervisors.

This key role will have responsibility for the safe and efficient individual production lines within Washington site and provide leadership, management & supervision of employees across all shift patterns to support business key metrics and achieve key performance indicators.

Job Context

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Shift Leader will manage a team of Production Operatives within a defined area.

The role will be the initial point of contact to address issues affecting the day to day operation of the manufacturing area (i.e. operational performance, quality and discipline through established business processes).

Principal Accountabilities


  • To ensure all SHE regulations are adhered to on site, by monitoring the team in terms of SOP, shop licences, limits and PPE compliance.
  • To ensure that all process log books, start up sheets, written shift handovers and start of shift briefs are completed.
  • Responsible for the delivery of Safety KPI's including OSHEN reporting, Tool Box talks, Talk Safes, Work Place Inspections, PAVA's, risk assessments etc.
  • Ensure that a high standard of housekeeping is maintained within their line and appropriate cleaning regimes are carried out


  • To ensure that the quality standards for the process are achieved, including recording of non conformance
  • To record reject and waste materials correctly on SAP.
  • To understand and drive improvement in the process KPIs via the CI and Six Sigma activities


  • Achievement of manufacturing costs and standards.
  • Lead daily reviews, ensuring timely resolution of problems, escalation of issues and feedback to the team. Escalate to Section Manager any issues which cannot be resolved affecting performance.


  • To understand the schedule for the process and to meet the manufacturing schedule adherence targets on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
  • Efficient operation of manufacturing processes and facilities to meet production programme requirements (i.e. MMS, efficiency, utilisation, OEE)


  • To ensure safe systems of work are in place, understood and adhered to in order to create and maintain a safe working environment for all operational employees.
  • To ensure training records are in place and up to date.
  • To lead, develop, involve and motivate team members to promotes team culture, flexibility and continuous improvement.
  • To be responsible for people performance within the team including the management of employment processes in association with the HR Department.
  • To manage all people issues to include discipline, development, supervision, time management and attendance over and up to a 3 shift continuous production cycle.
  • Ensure efficient workflow within team and across function

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • HNC level qualification or equivalent (ILM Level 3) in an engineering discipline or relevant manufacturing experience
  • Demonstrable track record of implementing and sustaining continuous improvement activities
  • Experienced people manager in a performance driven environment, with the ability to coach and develop others for success
  • Computer literacy (able to use Microsoft Office packages/SAP and SuccessFactors (or willing to work towards)
  • Experience in foundary, cnc machining or treatments would be an advantage
