Description

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking an electro-mechanical control systems engineer to join a team designing and building advanced, state-of-the-art systems in our Baltimore, MD location.

Our team supports multiple programs to develop stabilized Line of Sight (LOS) and servo control systems. Candidates should have a strong control systems background, and experience with the design, integration or testing of at least 1 part of precision gimbal stabilized systems. These include gimbals, Inertial Measurement Units (IMU), Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), DSP/Microcontroller control systems, bore sighting and transfer alignment algorithms, motor selection, power amps, and the sensors being stabilized. Candidates should possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. They should project a friendly, positive attitude and work cooperatively in a multi-faceted environment; as well as exhibiting an ability and desire to self-educate.

This position has the option to work a 9/80 schedule. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Roles and responsibilities include:

* Design, analysis, integration and testing of precision gimbal stabilized systems

* Selection of sensors, motors, power amps, and digital controllers based on cost constraints and technical performance requirements

* Detailed design of power amps for selected motors

* Board design for DSP/Microcontroller hardware

* Implementation of boresighting, transfer alignment, and motor control software algorithms





Qualifications

This is a Dual Band Position and can be filled at a Principal or Sr. Principal level based on the Basic Qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications for a Principal:

* Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or other related technical degree with 5+ years of relevant experience (3 years with a MS, 0 years with a PhD)

* Experience with simulation, design, integration or test of any component of gimbal control systems using inertial stabilization, which includes: sensors, motors, motor drives, digital controllers or embedded software

* Able to function in a multi-disciplinary team-oriented environment and rapidly adapt to changing work priorities

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills

* US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a Secret clearance

Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal:

* Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or other related technical degree with 9+ years of relevant experience (7 years with a MS, 4 years with a PhD)

* Experience with simulation, design, integration or test of multiple components of gimbal control systems using inertial stabilization, which includes: sensors, motors, motor drives, digital controllers or embedded software

* Able to function in a multi-disciplinary team-oriented environment and rapidly adapt to changing work priorities.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

* US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

* Experience with detailed hardware or software design of gimbal stabilized system components

* Troubleshooting, integration, and test experience

* Experience with the selection of sensors, motors, motor drives, or digital controllers based on cost constraints and technical performance requirements

* Troubleshooting, integration, and test experience

* Understanding of control theory

* Experience implementing boresighting or transfer alignment algorithms

* Experience with control of 3-phase brushless DC motors

* Experience with C code development for Texas Instruments C2000 microcontrollers using Code Composer Studio, or other embedded software/firmware development experience

* Proficiency with MATLAB, Simulink, and circuit simulation tools (e.g. SPICE, Saber

* Experience conducting structured trade studies

* Active TS/SCI security clearance
