Description:Stray Light Control Designer-This job description is for a senior designer, working with little supervision, must be able to analyze and design optical stray light mitigation schemes from ultraviolet to infrared using industry standard codes, such as ASAP and FRED, (our main codes). Experience with other codes, other than those mentioned, is valuable, but should transferable to these two design tools, at least. The designer is expected to work with the internal customer and the rest of the optical design engineering team (designer, mechanical engineer, optical system engineer) to get requirements data and to complete stray light control design. This includes integrating optical and mechanical design forms into the stray light model. The designer should be able to do full backward ray traces from the detector focal plane to all points accessible by the detector field of view. The optical forms we work with are fully reflective, refractive, and catadioptric. The stray light designer should be familiar with materials properties for optical materials and telescope structural materials such as bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDF) and emissivity vs. wavelength, and their polarization effects. The stray light designer should be familiar with the use of vanes and baffles to mitigate stray light, and make recommendations for their use within the design. Furthermore, the stray light designer should be experienced with thermal emission forms of stray light in infrared systems, the emissivity properties of optical materials and telescope structural materials, and the use of cold and warm mask techniques to control thermal emission from the optical system from getting into the detector area. The stray light designer should be able to recognize that a stray light analysis effort for a complex system can be very extensive, and that sometimes lower fidelity analyses and "rule of thumb" designs may be needed to do trade studies in a timely manner. The stray light designer should be able to acceptably communicate and recommend the design to peer reviewers, as well as management, internal and external customers. The designer may be asked to review the stray light mitigation designs of others as well.
Basic Qualifications:
1-Proven optical stray light design knowledge and experience. 2-Ability to integrate optical and mechanical design models into a stray light analysis code 3-Knowledge and experience with manufacturing methods of individual optics, and alignment methods of assemblies, including optical shop testing methods, such as interferometry, and other metrology. 4-Design for manufacturing experience.
Desired Skills:
1-Large optics stray light design experience, 2-Space optics stray light design experience, 3-Three mirror or four mirror anastigmat stray light control experience, 4-Multi-apectral, hyperspectral, or laser systems stray light control design experience. 5-Test verification of stray light control designs
6-Work with the rest of the optical design team to negotiate agreements on the design parameters and understanding of design notes. 7-Evaluate vendors proposals for stray light control as necessary. 8-Ability to incorporate as-built stray light measurements into stray light designs and verify designs vs. measurements.
