Job Description

Summary Statement:

Applies comprehensive knowledge of technical and/or manufacturing processes and practices and a detailed knowledge of industry standards and government regulations related to conducting thermal imaging, radiographic, penetrant, ultrasonic, magnetic particle or other nondestructive tests of nonmetallic or metallic aircraft structural parts and components that are used in operational aircraft applications. Ensures the new or repaired product meets company, customer and FAA specifications and standards.

Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities:

Plans and accomplishes a complete range of assignments and tasks that are varied and complex requiring experience and judgment to determine plans and action from standard procedural alternatives. Works under general supervision adapting procedures to meet work requirements. Priorities are determined by management.

Reviews test orders to determine type of test required, test procedures to follow, and the acceptability criteria as defined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), customer or Company process specifications.

Sets up and calibrates the equipment to ensure the inspection will yield accurate results. Determines test equipment settings according to type of part, material, thickness, distance from test equipment, and related variables.

Operates thermal, ultrasonic or other imaging equipment and observes video monitor screen to perform nondestructive inspection of metallic and nonmetallic components and parts for flaws, cracks, voids, discontinuities and presence of foreign object debris or other imperfections.

Reviews and interprets images on the video monitor of the components and parts to identify imperfections or debris. Examines film when conducting radiographic tests to locate structural or welding flaws. Determine if the part meets or exceeds the acceptability criteria of the prescribed process specifications.

Marks inspected parts to indicate defective areas. Evaluates test results against designated standards. Prepares reports outlining findings and conclusions.

Perform other duties as required. These duties may include assignments in departments and job classifications other than the primary assignment.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training, Professional Certification and Work Experience:

Experience may be substituted for the formal education and training requirements in this section at the discretion of management. High school diploma or G.E.D., Associate level degree in inspection technology and four (4) or more years of experience as an inspector aerostructure mechanic, bonder or other like production job or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience should be in the aerospace industry is preferred.

Level of Supervision Required:

Works independently and sets own priorities and objectives after consultation with management. May independently adapt techniques and tools to meet special needs. Obtains management approval as directed.

Standard Job Requirements:

* Must be able to read and write the English language, perform basic mathematical calculations and learn to interpret and comprehend company policies, procedures, safety instructions, and other like documents used in an aerospace manufacturing environment.

* Competent in the use of standard software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel and operate standard office equipment.

* Make telephone and direct personal contact with internal and external personnel and make formal presentations to small or large groups.

* May perform work of lesser skilled employees.

Special Job Requirements:

* Demonstrate competency in applying the following in performing normal job duties.

* Advanced knowledge and applied skill in non-destructive and in-process inspection.

* Level 3 Certification non-destructive Inspection processes.

* Working knowledge of AS9100 and ISO9001 Quality Systems.

* Ability to communicate both written and orally with departmental and production supervision.

* Proficient in the use of Microsoft programs (Word, Excel and Access)

* Read, write and speak English to read and interpret manufacturer’s specifications and manuals.

* A good understanding of sheet metal, composite materials, wood veneers, laminates and finishes.

Special Training:

* Safety training as required by OSHA.

* Complete the required NORDAM University training for all Stakeholders.

* Comply with The NORDAM Group Leadership Competencies for Stakeholders.

* Ability and willingness to assist and transfer technical knowledge to less experienced Stakeholders.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the Stakeholder is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The Stakeholder frequently is required to move from one place to another. The Stakeholder must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. Travel between facilities. Must be able to work in excess of eight (8) hours per day and five (5) days per week, if required. NRD: Must be able to ascend and descend stairs.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the Stakeholder is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The Stakeholder is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Mental Requirements:Work in stressful situations and handle multiple priorities. Demonstrate interpersonal, organizational and communication skills to interact effectively with other people both inside and outside the company.
