Overview

The Cal-ore Flight Nurse provides customer oriented, high-quality patient, in a safe and efficient manner. In every situation the Flight Nurse does what is right for the patient based on a thorough assessment and implantation of protocols, SOP’s and appropriate care.

Responsibilities

* Assists primary flight nurse and performs functions within legal scope of practice of licensure.
* Assists with all aspects of patient care during transport.
* Demonstrates competency in using all aero medical equipment aboard aircraft.
* Demonstrates knowledge of company policies, transport protocols and emergency interventions.
* Reports to the hospital to assist with the preparation of the patient for transport. Responsible for obtaining all necessary transport equipment required for the preparation of the patient. Responsible for confirming all necessary transport paperwork prior to transport, and for transporting the medical records and imaging studies to the receiving facility.
* Completes preflight checklist prior to take-off, before arrival of patient.
* Countersigns all narcotics administered during transport and narcotic count on return.
* Responsible for ensuring that all equipment used for an air ambulance mission is returned from the mission, cleaned, restocked, and properly stored.
* Responsible for cleaning and restocking the aircraft upon return from an air ambulance mission.
* Responsible for completion of the billing sheet and for seeing that the entire medical record is complete on return to home base.
* Responsible for assisting the pilot in maintaining wakefulness during night flight legs.
* Attends flight training based on AAMS (ASHBEAMS) curriculum.
* Attends all mandatory aero medical training sessions and staff meetings.
* Must maintain the licensing and currency of experience standards required by all governmental and CAMTS agencies.
* Other duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, either orally or in writing.

Qualifications

Qualifications

* Registered nurse with current California and Oregon licensure.
* 3 years of experience in ER or ICU.
* Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS provider cards required. Instructor level cards preferred.
* CCRN, CEN, or CFRN required within 2 years of hire.
* PHTLS, NRP, and TNCC required within 3 months of hire.

Requirements

* Excellent customer service skills.
* Ability to communicate professionally, effectively and persuasively.
* Ability to maintain composure under pressure, works efficiently and accurately with frequent interruptions, and set and reset multiple priorities.
* Remains cognizant of local EMS county protocols and requirements.
* Presents a professional image as a Cal-Ore flight team member.
* Maintains a positive team attitude with paramedic, respiratory therapist, pilot, mechanic and communication specialist by working cohesively.
* Works independently and tolerates high stress levels while maintaining a good rapport with co-workers.
* Maintains ongoing knowledge of relevant aviation SOP’s.

Environmental Conditions:

The Flight Nurse’s duties are performed in either indoor or outdoor environments. The Flight Nurse Rescuer may be exposed to routine office noises along with frequent exposure to an aircraft hangar environment with loud aircraft noise, fumes, gases, odors, dust particles and mechanical/electrical and chemical hazards. The Flight Nurse Rescuer must be present at work site to complete the job.

Protective Equipment:

* Nomex full body flight suit
* Leather or Nomex boots
* Aviation Helmet
* PPE – latex gloves, goggles, and HEPA mask
* Hearing protection (plugs, band or head set)

Work Place Conditions: The Flight Nurse Rescuer is physically based at an airport (or similar) “crew quarters” for 24 hour shifts and must be prepared at a moment’s notice (within 4 minutes) to begin air ambulance or rescue missions that last from ½ hour to 8 hours in duration. The crew quarters are equipped with kitchen, shower, rest and sleeping facilities.

Work Schedule: The current standard shift at Cal-Ore for flight crewmembers is ten (10) rotating 24-hour shifts per every 4 week period. Sometimes a flight shift may extend past 24 hours. Must be available for one (1) on-call shift in a four (4) week period.
