Aerojet Rocketdyne is seeking an entry-level Engineering Technician to join our team in Culpeper/Orange, VA.
Our Engineering Technicians provide valuable assistance to engineers by their ability to reduce engineering concepts, drawings, sketches, and ideas to practice in a laboratory environment. They are able to create, fabricate, modify, repair, assemble, and disassemble articles to make models, prototypes or test articles. They also are able to set up and conduct tests/experimental procedures in accordance with specification requirements under environmentally controlled conditions (temperature, humidity, environment, etc.). They must be able to design experiments and conduct tests in a controlled fashion to be able to produce consistent, repeatable results in a meaningful way. They assist engineers in being able to follow specification procedures and instructions in the development process by demonstrating the production readiness and maturity of the processes envisioned by the engineers, such as adhesive bonding of specimens, composite lay-up of components, insulating prototypes, and/or producing experimental/production batches of energetic/Inert compounds.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)
45% - Perform routine tests, mix/cast chemicals and energetics, collect data, operate equipment in accordance with standard procedures. Demonstrates proficiency in following detailed work standards and following safety protocols. Demonstrates proficiency in acquiring skills and performing work with specialization as required.
35% - Conducts laboratory procedures for chemical analysis with wet chemical techniques or analytical instruments. Other procedures include performing mechanical testing, environmental exposure, combustion testing, hazard testing and propellant compatibility testing to evaluate the suitability of materials for specific product or process applications.
20% - Applies results for quality control purposes, process or product failure analysis or other forensic purposes, contamination analysis or for the understanding of results from engineering development activities.
Requires an Associate's degree in a related discipline and less than a year of related experience OR a high school diploma (or equivalent) and two years of related physical science, chemical, electronic and/or mechanical experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires an aptitude to develop specialized skills necessary to support energetic/inert material preparation/mixing/testing, performing chemical analysis, etc.

* Applicable skills to perform the functions of the position within the assigned area.
* Data collection skills and analysis with particular attention to detail.
* Communication, verbal and written skills.
* Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
* Laboratory hygiene and other safety protocols.
US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.
Driver’s License Requirement:
Must possess a valid driver’s license for the class of vehicle driven and meet automobile insurability requirements of the Company. Eligibility for employment for those who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stair, scaffolding, ramps), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces), bending, reaching, handling/fingering (seizing, holding, grasping, turning picking, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds. Work may require the ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, crane, hoist, man lift, etc.) in a safe manner. While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield), foot protection (i.e. steel toed shoes, rubber boots, etc.), gloves, hard hat, shop coat and hearing protection. Some positions may require Respirator clearance up to and including the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Level A clearance. Work requires the ability to change into or out of personal protective equipment when entering or exiting manufacturing, laboratory, or other areas. Some employees may be required to drive between various locations within the Company facility or between locations. Work duties may also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer and/or the ability to travel by air or auto. Ability to distinguish colors may also be necessary. This position may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
