Job Description

The position exists to contribute to, as part of an increasingly integrated stress / design team of aerostructure specialists, the determination of data for use in the verification of design or modification of company aerostructure products, ensuring their compliance with regulatory requirements and fitness for purpose.

  • The Stress function is becoming increasingly integrated into design and, is responsible for strength/qualification aspects of products for which the company is the design authority. This fundamentally involves analysis leading to approval of engineering drawings and the generation of the test requirements for static and fatigue strength summary documents.
  • There is also close cooperation with the Loads, Dynamics, Aerodynamics, Flight Test, Mass Properties and Production Departments. In addition, the Stress function is required to approve documents produced by the Materials Laboratory, Manufacturing, System Safety, Quality and Supply Chain Engineering.
  • The Stress function also provides support to Manufacturing for approval of minor deviations. More serious manufacturing defects are dealt with using the Company's Concession Procedure. Stress Engineering also assists in the resolution of in-service structural failures, in collaboration with Airworthiness Authorities and customers.
  • Outside the Company, the function includes liaison with the Military and Civil Airworthiness Authorities in demonstrating the airworthiness of the Company's products and agreeing methods and programmes of testing to achieve this. It also involves approval of requirements specifications for procuring bought-out items and liaison with the Vendor on strength issues. Stress Engineering also represents the Company on national panels and committees which generate airworthiness regulations, design, information and test procedures, together with inter-partner collaboration.

Key Responsibility Areas

Contribute to engineering solutions by undertaking stress analysis of schemes and engineering drawings as directed by SDD management, and with some supervision and guidance.
Prepare requirements for structural test programmes.
Analyse results of structural and material tests.
Calculate static and fatigue strengths demonstrated by tests.
Prepare sections of fatigue substantiation reports and type records.
Liaise with other engineering departments at a corresponding level to achieve technical and departmental objectives.
To undertake check stress and fatigue analysis where appropriate.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required

Qualification: Degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering or similar

  • Perform defined engineering design tasks required for project, process and departmental purposes using established methods.
  • Possess knowledge of the overall static structural substantiation process from definition of external loads through airframe finite element analysis to final check stress clearance;
  • Possess knowledge of airframe fatigue substantiation including safe life, flight data gathering of fatigue loads, through fatigue life calculation methods to in-service aircraft monitoring.
  • Knowledge of the main design tools used within LH (MathCAD, Hyperworks and NASTRAN);
  • Knowledge of the drawing and design processes;
  • Knowledge of lightweight structural analysis
  • Knowledge of aircraft manufacture and assembly;
  • Ability to follow well defined engineering processes.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, contributing to its effectiveness through personal work flexibility.
