IATA is seeking a senior level risk and insurance professional to join its Member & External Relations (MER) Division. Reporting to the Corporate Secretary and SVP MER, the incumbent will provide leadership and expertise to the industry on programs designed to ensure the continuity of insurance coverage to the broader airline community, while reducing industry costs.
Maintaining responsibility for managing and further developing industry risk management initiatives, the successful candidate will also be responsible for directing IATA’s corporate insurance requirements and, as a subject matter expert, supporting the company’s Enterprise Risk Management program.
This is a high profile position with key interfaces with the insurance brokerage and re-insurance sector, IATA member airlines and a range of key internal IATA stakeholders.
Industry Risk Management
Represent the interests of IATA’s member airlines on aviation insurance matters, and develop industry insurance strategies and risk management solutions aimed at containing overall risk exposures and costs.
Organize an annual Industry Risk and Insurance Management (RIM) Forum, which advises on emerging insurance and risk management issues of concern to the air transport industry, and assist in the execution of key industry campaigns in the field of risk management and insurance.
Provide thought leadership and guidance in the creation and innovative risk management approaches for the industry including for example global and local default insurance programs, designed as a cost effective alternative to bank guarantees and other types of security, in support of IATA’s Industry Settlement Systems as well the innovative use of captives to address inherent risks and their treatment related to both existing and new business initiatives and ventures.
IATA Risk Management
Support the preparation of insurance budgets and premium allocations and manage insurance renewal activities, including preparation of underwriting submissions, negotiation, procurement/placement and review for compliance of terms and conditions of insured and/or self-insured programs.
Manage the relationship with IATA’s brokers and insurers, monitor the performance of services against service level agreements. Work closely with business units to provide insurance support and training.
Develop and implement a pro-active claims management program to include claims administrator performance standards, claims reviews and audits. Provide leadership to internal claims management staff, and oversight of insurer claims management efforts.
Act as a subject matter expert to the IATA Risk management Committee on insurance matters by providing reporting and developing key metrics, including an analysis of loss information, identified trends, and opportunities and recommendations to mitigate future losses.
Support IATA’s Enterprise Risk Management program by providing expert advice and analysis on the monetary value of all identified risks, the likelihood of claims, and identified gaps between insurable exposures and actual coverages in place.
Support the development and maintenance of IATA products (e.g. publications, conferences) and services (e.g. training) designed to provide industry guidance on the discipline of risk management and insurance.
Collaborate with senior management and other leaders in defining the company's risk profile and tolerance. Provide education and training to all levels of management in striving towards a risk intelligent organization.
Provide periodic written and verbal reports to senior managers.
Perform the duties of the Risk Champion for the MER Division by assisting the business areas in identifying risks in existing or new processes, products, systems and change activities, and ensuring the information recorded accurately reflects the current level of risk in terms of description, control effectiveness evaluation, and likelihood and impact assessments, taking into account the status of prescribed action plans.
Support the contract review process and negotiate contractual insurance requirements by providing guidance to management regarding contractual provisions (e.g. warranty, insurance, indemnifications, liability, etc.).
Support the Legal Department by advising on any mediations, arbitrations and other significant events associated with litigation as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
Success in leading corporate-wide efforts to identify, assess and mitigate/insure key organizational risks by working collaboratively with senior management, process owners and Board members.
Expert knowledge from wide exposure to various corporate insurance and risk management methodologies and frameworks.
Successful experience in reducing a company's total cost of risk through loss control and claims management practices.
Expertise with a variety of insurance policies including executive/professionals, cyber, general liability, automobile and property coverages.
Unquestionable ethics, integrity, and values.
Strategic, creative, and analytically minded. Sound judgment and ability to act independently.
A "big picture thinker" who understands vision and strategy, but also a hands-on executive who can get things done with limited resources.
A trusted confidant and advisor; someone who is sought out by his/her staff as well as by other senior leaders for advice.

Ability to travel as needed within and outside of Canada
Ten to fifteen years of experience in insurance and risk management.
Knowledge of ISO and other risk management frameworks a plus.
Strong workers' compensation and aviation liability experience at the international, multi-country level
Knowledge of finance and accounting and, familiarity with methods for allocating insurance costs
An undergraduate degree in Finance or a business discipline is required. Masters in Business Administration preferred
A professional risk management certification is preferred (ARM, CRM, etc.).
