POSITION INFORMATION

Role Summary
The Director Airport Affairs oversees and manages Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air's (AS and QX) day-to-day interactions with key airports throughout the Alaska system. This role also has responsibility for managing $100M or more in annual spend and is a key influencer at locations under his/her purview. These activities include leadership roles on the Airline Airport Affairs Committees for airports on behalf of both airlines and strategic development and property management of the company's real estate assets at the airport properties. The Director will maintain strong professional relationships with peer airlines, the airport, and relevant government leaders. He/she will lead and direct space requirements development at assigned locations and negotiate the lease and operating agreements under which Alaska and Horizon operate. The Director is also responsible for the leadership and coordination of employees reporting to him/her with the objective of advocating and demonstrating a strategic approach to airport real estate, best real estate business practices, and increased efficiencies through improved gate and space utilization. The incumbent will also a have demonstrated ability to coordinate with other departments and some experience in airport operations, finance or a related area. Directors generally have responsibility for the most complex and highly visible cities in the network and are considered subject matter experts in most airline/airport real estate matters.

Scope & Complexity
This director-level position supports complex airport affairs and development activities for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.

Key Duties

*

Represent AS and QX interests with relevant airport authorities and business partners to serve the company's real estate needs at strategic locations throughout the Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air's system.

*

Negotiates airport use and lease agreements, rates and charges, and maintains working relationships with airport staff, other airlines, local and federal agencies, and relevant airline associations to advance AS and QX business.

*

Serves as primary liaison between key airports and AS and QX, fostering and ensuring an optimal and productive relationship with airport executives, political leaders, and staff.

*

Responsible for AS and QX's role and strategy development regarding airport Capital Improvement Programs, Master Plans and internal growth initiatives

*

Responsible for driving lease negotiations to completion, including those with non-traditional approaches utilizing Public-Private Partnerships (P3s) and/or ground leases.

*

Where necessary, coordinates regular internal and external meetings until concluded

*

Regularly coordinates and produces updates for AS and QX leadership

*

Engages and manages external support resources where needed to conclude negotiations

*

Maintains deep understanding of the airport rates and charges models in effect or under consideration.

*

Partners with key internal business contacts including network and capacity planning, marketing, airport operations, and external/government relations.

*

Develops reports, analyses strategies and concepts for airport projects, initiatives, or business opportunities.

Job-Specific Skills, Experience and Education
Required:

*

8 years of experience in airport or airline operations, preferably with large hub airports.

*

5 years of experience in a leadership capacity or with commensurate responsibility as an individual contributor

*

5 years of experience solving complex airline/airport operational issues, preferably at a large hub airport.

*

A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree.

*

Experience with airport rates and charges models.

*

Experience leading major airport/airline relations and negotiations on behalf of an airline or airport.

*

Must be a self-starter, motivated, and able to work independently and out of the office with limited supervision.

*

Superior ability to present complex problems and situations to senior leadership and to drive resolutions with limited guidance.

*

Ability to perform financial analysis, interpret architectural drawings and understand the complex nature of company operational requirements.

*

Ability to work with other departments, other airlines, and airport representatives to reach business and capital project objectives on complex, long-term projects.

*

Ability to manage, lead, and mentor employees.

*

Intimate familiarity with airport Grant Assurances and Passenger Facility Charge (PFC) regulations.

*

High school diploma or equivalent required

*

Minimum age of 18

*

Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred:

*

5 years of experience in contract negotiation, drafting and administration preferred, preferably in an airport environment.

*

5 years of experience interacting with large and/or complex airport organizations, ideally with a large port authority or airport system.

*

3 years of experience with terminal and airfield capacity and modeling.

*

3 years of experience interacting with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airports District Office (ADO) staff and leadership, including experience with Airport Layout Plans (ALPs), Master Plans and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS).

*

Experience interacting with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) representatives, ideally at the Federal Security Director (FSD) level. Knowledge of relevant Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs).

*

A Master of Business Administration or a Juris Doctor is preferred.
