Following the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union, the UK is re-establishing a team of technical airworthiness specialist that will support its diverse certification and design activities, including those associated with commercial air transport, general aviation, unmanned air vehicles, space flight and innovation. We’re looking for a Design and Certification Manager to form part of that team.

The Role
A dedicated leader, you will lead a team of Design and Certification Specialists to deliver oversight of initial and continued airworthiness activities, in addition to the oversight of approved Design Organisations within the UK and with its partner design organisations.

Collaborating with the Head of Airworthiness, you will deliver the UK’s ICAO State of Design responsibilities, continuing to develop and continuously improve our capability and capacity to deliver projects for industry.

With a diverse scope, you will operate across the Safety and Airspace Regulation Group (SARG), providing resource to other capability areas as required and delivering projects on-time, on cost and on quality. You will engage both internally and externally and will lead on future regulation initiatives, whilst ensuring your team maintain an excellent understanding of future innovation projects and concepts.

Where required, you will work with our Legal team and Investigation & Enforcement Team (IET) to take proportional regulatory action against organisations or individuals that are unable to fulfill their regulatory accountabilities or demonstrate compliance or acceptable safety performance.

Where necessary you will work with other teams, across the CAA, to take proportional action in order to apply our Performance Based Regulation principals. Developing the team’s capability, you will maintain and strengthen the team in line with our strategy and business needs. You’ll collaborate closely with the training department to deliver this.

Given the impact of Covid-19, it’s likely that you will work remotely to begin with as we plan for a return to work within the government guidelines.

About You

  • You will hold an engineering degree or equivalent, or demonstrable industry experience.
  • Ideally you will have performed a similar role previously, for example within approved design organisations or regulatory authorities.
  • Previous leadership and management experience is important to the role.
  • Knowledge of certification in aerospace and a detailed knowledge of the functioning of regulation.
  • You will be a specialist in your field with sound knowledge of the functioning and management of the aerospace industry, preferably gained by working in an aeronautically related engineering field.
  • You will be a confident decision maker and excellent communicator with the ability to conduct technical conversation and engage with all partners.
  • You will be a self-starter, comfortable working under your own initiative to prioritise and deliver workload/projects on time and to budget.

What Can We Offer You?
Given the requirement to re-establish our State of Design capability this is a great opportunity, providing you the platform to support and shape a diverse spectrum of UK industry in a time where innovation in air travel is rapid. Over time your team is also likely to expand, so you will create and mold a team based around the skills needed to deliver on our portfolio of work.

Working with the capability team to deliver projects and continuous improvements, you will engage with both internal and external partners on industry matters with travel in the UK and Europe. Furthermore, there will be opportunities for learning and working alongside other likeminded managers to lead the airworthiness team on its longer-term strategy.

Working With Us
We offer a range of fantastic benefits such as flexible working arrangements, free onsite gym at Gatwick, discounted gym membership for London, 28 days annual leave, additional 5 days leave purchase scheme, a competitive pension scheme and much more. Wherever possible, we offer flexible and variable working hours to help our people effectively manage all areas of their lives.
