Job Description

Report to the Head of Aviation Safety, you will have a key role in assessing LH UK the top-level safety risk management and performance across both the Yeovil site and 'off-site' locations. You will be responsible for the overall management, coordination and further development of the LH UK SMS and for identifying and managing the top-level risks across LH UK through the use of the cross-company BOWTIEs. You will act on as the Coordinator of the ESB and will also maintain the metrics that measure the LH UK aviation safety performance helping to ensure and assure that key aviation safety responsibilities and actions are carried out.

Key Responsibility Areas

He/she would be responsible for:

Management of the LH UK SMS

  • The continuing authorship and updating of the single company Safety Management System (SMS) (CRS22) and associated documents.
  • Ensuring that the LH UK SMS is maintained up-to-date, verifying that there is an appropriate level of assessment of its performance and monitoring its effectiveness and amending it accordingly.
  • Ensuring that safety objectives / targets are assigned and monitoring their achievement
  • Providing advice across the business on the SMS and other top-level safety matters, ensuring that appropriate training in safety management is available, that the training is fit for purpose, and that it is effective.

Management of LHUK Strategic Risk

  • Bringing together the LH UK strategic management of safety risk at the ESB level from across all 5 functional areas of the business.
  • Ensuring coordination of the Functional Area BOWTIES and ensuring that they were being activated using similar processes across the business.
  • Identifying the LH UK top safety risks and overseeing their management on behalf of the ESB.
  • Ensuring that issues arising from investigations, VORs, SANs, DASORs, MAA and internal audits and other sources are mapped across the BOWTIES.

Coordination of the ESB

  • Acting as the Coordinator for the ESB.
  • Coordinating the Pre-ESB risk Identification Meeting with the Functional Bowtie managers.
  • Bringing together the ESB agenda and slide pack
  • Ensuring that ESB actions arising are chased and addressed in appropriate timescales.
  • Ensuring that appropriate minutes record the ESB meetings.


  • Ensuring that the Head of Aviation Safety is familiarised with all significant product and product service safety issues in a timely fashion.
  • Providing assurance to the Head of Aviation Safety that through due process safety requirements are being met.

Safety Meetings

  • Participating in the Functional SAGs.
  • Periodically participating in Safety Working Group meetings to assess their effectiveness.
  • Representing the company at safety forums held by external bodies (regulators etc.).

Risk Management

  • Monitoring the process for the management of the assessment of safety risks resulting from business change and reporting any issue to the ESB. ?
  • Ensuring that hazards related to product and product services are being identified and risks analysed and managed across all in-scope activities. *
  • Ensuring that appropriate top-level safety risks are included in the company top-level business risk register and that they are being managed appropriately.

Safety Culture

  • Promoting the importance of all aspects of safety and ensuring that a strong and proactive 'safety culture' is promulgated throughout the organisation; defining training programmes or other means of ensuring that this ethos is deployed, achieved and developed. *

The LH UK Air Safety Manager is accountable to the Head of Aviation Safety for these responsibilities.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required

  • Strong engineering or audit background with experience within an Aerospace and Manufacturing environment (ideally Educated to HNC level or equivalent)
  • Confident and accomplished communicator with influencing skills.
  • Trained error investigator and thoroughly knowledgeable in the use of EDA (vice MEDA)
  • Trained in effective ERG
  • Trained internal quality lead auditor.
  • Experience of applying quality procedures and systems within an Aerospace environment
  • Detailed knowledge of the company Quality System
  • Broad knowledge of quality certification standards (e.g. EN9100) and approval schemes (e.g. EASA part 145 & M, MAA MRP Part 145, CFAOS, DAOS etc.)
  • Integrity and professional approach, who is both self-willed and confident.
  • Knowledge and use of root cause analysis tools e.g. 5 why, Ishikawa, 8D etc
  • Preferably a trained error investigator
  • Preferably a trained internal quality auditor
  • Broad knowledge of the business organisation
  • Experienced SAP user
  • Extensive knowledge of aircraft production and maintenance operations.
  • Thorough working understanding of occurrence reporting systems (OSHENS, ASIMS, ECCAIRS)
  • Trained and have a thorough knowledge of CPR 053.14
