Ground Crew Jobs
Ground crew roles are incredibly varied, encompassing all the support roles needed to get the plane off the ground and make sure all journeys run smoothly. Broadly speaking these roles can be split into two categories: commercial and technical. Some ground crew roles have their own sections on Aviation Job Search, such as Document Controllers, Customer Service and Co-Ordinator Jobs but some of the other main roles include:
Passenger Service Agents: The people who check your bag, your tickets and passport, allocating seats and printing off boarding passes as well as dealing with the specific needs of any passengers who need assistance.
Airport Security / Manager: Airport security don’t just pat you down, but are trained to deal with any number of possible security issues, keeping you safe on your journey. Airport security managers take responsibility for a team of security officers, ensuring the team’s smooth running.
Shopkeeper: Ensuring the smooth running of all the airport concessions: taking stock, keeping it clean and dealing with customers.
Crew Rostering Supervisors: A logistical role whose responsibility is to make sure all planes leave with a full flight and cabin crew, covering for illnesses vacation time etc.
Baggage Handler: Making sure the right bags go on the right planes, checking baggage against flight lists. You need to be physically fit, organised and trustworthy
Fire and Safety Crew: These crucial emergency services personnel are on call at all times, ready to deal with any accidents which may occur.
Ramp Agent: Ramp agents usually work for specific airlines not airports, although they will likely be vetted by the airport itself. Ramp agents guide planes safely to and from their gates, and operate a range of machinery to do so, as they may well be required to aid in the baggage transfer process
Flight Dispatcher: Flight dispachers take into account weather, aircraft condition, landing conditions and design flight paths accordingly. If anything changes, they are responsible for informing the pilot to ensure the safety of the plane and its passengers.
Storekeeper/Logistics: This is a logistical role, which ensures orgainising and distributing supplies for the rest of the ground crew team. Tools and materials all come through storekeepers, who keep track of stock and replenish as necessary.
