Sr. Tool Design Engineer designs various tooling fixtures for machining, welding, assembly, handling, ground support and composites tooling. Candidate must possess strong aptitude for performing stress analysis (FEM, classical methods), check reports by delegates and be a focal/consultant for tool stress.On occasion, position requires support of Master Dimension activities, such as design assist for NC machining and Mylar creation and plotting for inspection tooling.
This position will interface directly with multiple engineering disciplines (Manufacturing, Product, Quality, Stress, etc).The Tool Engineer will also serve as technical support for tooling related issues on new and legacy product designs and manufacturing processes.
Communicate and interface openly and frequently with Managers, Project Engineers and other discipline engineers and participate in periodic project reviews and customer discussions, as required, to ensure costumer satisfaction.
Review and approve design basis and calculations of equipment sizing and technical specifications.
Strong aptitude to adopt and implement Continuous Improvement and Lean principles.
Carries out detailed tool design work utilizing CATION 3D modeling (Model Based Definition) designs standard work in agreement with Tool Design standards to meet expectations of leaders and customers.
Responsible for preparing and presenting mechanical designs at design reviews. If required, generates minutes from Design Reviews.
Ensures design files and information are kept up to date, and stored in accordance with departmental procedures.
Highlights all technical risks to the Tooling Lead/Manager.
Qualification: 5-10 yrs direct relevant experience in Tool Engineering and Manufacturing, Operations environment (Aerospace preferred). Strong Mechanical/Manufacturing Aptitude.
Good understanding of assembly, machining and composite manufactuiring processes.
Good understanding of tool fabrication processes including welding, machining, heat treat, etc.
Good understanding of Handling Equipment, and Ground Support Equipment.
Good understanding of ANSI Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
Knowledge of CAD/CAM systems, CATIA V5 MBD (2000 hours minimum) experience preferred.
Experienced in Lean manufacturing principles and strong aptitude towards implementing continous improvement.
Experienced in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Powerpoint, etc.) and good technical writing skills.
Experience with with tooling stress analysis utilizing FEM and classical methods.
Education: BS in Engineering Dicipline (Mechanical, Civil, Industrial, or Aero preferred)
