The Boeing Company is seeking an experienced Packaging Engineering Specialist to support the team in Huntsville, Alabama.
The Packaging Engineering Specialist:
Under general supervision and direction, establishes and provides written justification to evaluate equipment features and determines the most cost effective option.
Following approval, submits request and justification in accordance with company procedures or policy.
Assists equipment procurement by researching and investigating the requirements/applications for material handling equipment to improve capabilities in order to evaluate quotations from potential suppliers of equipment; prepares cost estimates, and prepares budget justification for equipment.
Under general supervision, maximizes efficiencies and implements improvements for cost effective worldwide distribution and storage by considering practical packaging and/or handling applications.
Documents packaging instructions and coded packaging procedures (e.g., MIL-STD-2073, ASTM D3951) by developing and coding packaging data for inclusion in the appropriate database (e.g., internal standards, procedures) to standardize processes for internal/external customers.
Supports shop activities by applying established standards (e.g., ASTM D3951, Mil-Std-2073) based upon part characteristics (e.g., aircraft, missile, company) in order to protect the parts during transportation.
Provides logistics support analysis by applying established company policies and procedures in accordance with domestic and international laws.
Develops warehousing material flow, equipment layout, and capital budget to store assembly and support materials.
Assists in calculating volume, storage requirements, quantity and type of storage and handling equipment needed for high efficiency, low cost warehouse operations.
Under general supervision, maintains employee awareness for hazardous materials general familiarization, function specific, and safety requirements by providing walk-through support to meet federal and international regulations.
Oversees the training and compliance for the implementation of HM-232 (Hazardous Materials Security Plans) for the receiving, storing and shipping of hazardous materials (dangerous goods).
Under general supervision, evaluates, classifies and develops packaging instructions for hazardous materials.
Plans the markings, labeling, packaging, and documentation for shipments in compliance with Federal, State, and International regulations.

Detailed knowledge of MIL-STD-2073, ASTM D3951 and NPR6000.1H packaging requirements.
Detailed knowledge of HM-232 Hazardous Materials Security Plans.
Detailed knowledge of MIL-HDBK-304 and use of vendor cushioning curves for package cushioning design.
Detailed knowledge in the use of Title 49 CFR, IATA/ICAO and IMDG regulations for Hazardous Material/Dangerous Goods shipments by all modes.
Detailed knowledge of MIL-STD-129 Marking for Shipment and Storage Requirements.
Training experience in military and commercial packaging, handling, shipping and transportation of equipment and Dangerous Goods.
Experience developing plans for handling high value, program critical and large parts requiring crane/forklift operations.
Experience with shipping container design.
Experience designing in house handling aids and ergonomic packaging.
Active U.S. Security Clearance.
Bachelor’s degree or higher.
This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.
Bachelor's degree and typically 10 or more years' related work experience, a Master's degree and typically 8 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
