Engineering Technician - 1078173

Provide technical support in the mechanical assembly, disassembly, repair, refurbishment, documentation, and testing of Rodent Research hardware and equipment. The employee will work as a member of a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians who are focused on preparing for and implementing experiments that NASA has selected for flight aboard the International Space Station (ISS), or for defined ground studies. Work products may include rodent habitats and transporters, animal transfer containers, water storage assemblies, foodbar kit assemblies, on-orbit research kits, habitat enrichment devices, and special mission research instruments. Work activities may include acquisition of flight research materials, assembly of materials into packaged kits, package labeling, rodent research equipment construction, rodent research equipment cleaning/repair/refurbishment, rodent research equipment functional testing, and documentation of all steps in the assembly/production/refurbishment process. Work training is required and will be provided to ensure adherence to all standards and best practices.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

· Assemble, disassemble, and clean high-value ground and space flight hardware in accordance with established procedures.

· Test high-reliability, high-value experiment hardware in accordance with established procedures.

· Update and execute written procedures in coordination with a team involving engineering and quality assurance.

· Support other technicians and engineers in assembly, disassembly, cleaning, testing, and troubleshooting.

· Generate and place purchase requests for tools and materials needed to refurbish project research hardware/equipment.

· Assist production support offices/officials in completing production/quality verification documentation.

· Perform rework/repairs of product/performance non-conformities.

· Perform in highly controlled environments, including clean benches and cleanrooms.

· Perform testing and analysis of support equipment.

· Ensure tools and test equipment are properly calibrated.

· Will need to safely utilize cleaning and sterilization chemicals such as ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, iodine, etc.

· Complete training and maintain technical proficiency.

· Travel to launch sites (e.g. Kennedy, Wallops) in support of mission launches and ground controls may be required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience:

High school diploma and at least three years of experience that aligns with skills outlined herein.

Required Skills/Training:

· A high level of manual dexterity, including the ability to handle and control small parts during critical assembly, disassembly, and cleaning processes is required.

· Must retain demonstrated ability to perform to high-quality workmanship standards. Must retain ability to read, interpret, and analyze technical drawings, diagrams, and technical publications.

· A proven track record working in compliance with applicable Quality Assurance (QA), Safety, Health and Environmental plans, policies, and procedures is important.

· Background in system testing and troubleshooting is relatively important.

· The successful candidate must have a solid history of functioning in a team environment, being a self-starter, working independently with limited instruction, and meeting critical technical and schedule demands.

· Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.

· Knowledge in standard computer tools and applications is required.

Desired Education, Experience, Skills or Training:

· Education or training in mechanical systems and engineering is beneficial to this position.

· A college degree or post-secondary school training from a military or vocational education program is highly desired.

· Experience building, testing, and handling space flight hardware is highly desired.

· Experience in a shop environment, fabricating mechanical parts using standard shop equipment, is a plus.

· Experience with compressed gas systems is beneficial.
