Tips To Improve Pilot Communication Skills

Aircraft accidents occur every year, and lack of communication or misinterpretation between pilots and air traffic controllers is one of the main factors. It is imperative to learn and then practice how to improve communication. Pilot training is comprehensive, and they have to pass many tests to get the licence.

But somehow, there are some pilots and aviation authorities who term communication time wastage. Therefore, accidents in aviation occur because of the misunderstanding between pilots and air traffic controllers.

You can check out some of the tips mentioned below to improve communication skills as a pilot.

Understand aviation roles:

Every aviation professional has a specific part to play in air operations. As a pilot, you need to understand the roles of others. If you are a pilot who will use radio to communicate with ATC, you need to read and understand how the air traffic system operates.

Don’t assume:

If you have communicated with the air traffic controller and still feel unsure about the actual message due to technical problems, don’t assume anything. If you shy away from asking the ATC again for confirmation, it can put the lives of passengers at risk. Although the air traffic is continuously on the rise, the controllers are there to help you out. So, ask the traffic controller again to get the directions before making a decision.

Be aware of surroundings:

Being a pilot, it is your responsibility to remain focused on your situation. But you should also be mindful of what is going on in your surroundings. Paint a picture of the radar in your mind according to your observation and the comments of ATC. In this way, you will get to know the nearest aircraft and the direction.

Technology has made our lives more comfortable, and you can utilize it to improve your skills. Grab a radio and visit the air traffic website. Paint a picture in mind to develop different scenarios. You will realize that this practice will help you communicate with ATC in a better way.

Learn specific phrases:

Pilots and air traffic controllers use standardized phraseology to avoid any ambiguity that can lead to fatal accidents. Therefore, you should consult the aviation glossary to bring clarity to your communication. If you are a trainee pilot, then you should listen to live conversations between ATC and pilots. You can also visit an airport and tune frequencies on aviation radio. Over time, you’ll be able to adapt and feel no problem understanding the traffic controller’s instructions.

Plan before speaking:

The time of the air traffic controller is precious as he is responsible for managing the traffic load. As a pilot, you should desist from speaking to him on irrelevant matters. You can also jot down key points on a paper. It will save time as you will be aware of what to ask. After writing the topics, you can open the mic and concisely speak to the ATC.
