An airline captain has overall responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft and the safety of crew and passengers. For a senior pilot role, you would need to clock up at least five years’ experience beforehand. Once in this position, you can earn a very attractive salary, with perks including travel passes and accommodation allowances.
The day-to-day schedule of a captain can vary greatly. Tasks can include making regular checks on aircraft’s technical performance, pre-flight safety checks on navigation and operating systems, directing all aspects of flight planning, documenting aircraft and operational compliance to company and government standards and regulations, and managing a large team including flight deck crew, cabin and ground crew coordination.
