Qatar Airways is the national carrier of the State of Qatar, and has rapidly grown from small beginnings to become a major player in global aviation – serving 128 destinations today, and employing over 28,000 people. It boarded over 17 million customers in 2012.

It was launched in 1993 and began operating flights in 1994 as a small regional carrier. The airline was originally owned privately by members of the royal family of Qatar. Then it was re-launched in 1997, under a new management team, with the dynamic leadership of Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker, who was appointed CEO in 1996.

Qatar Airways has since become one of the fastest growing carriers in the world with unprecedented expansion averaging double digit growth year-on-year. Currently, the government of Qatar holds a 50% stake in the airline, with the rest held by private investors.

In April 2011, Qatar Airways reached the milestone of having 100 destinations in its global route map. Another achievement came the same year - just 14 years after its re-launch – it was named Airline of the Year 2011 at the annual Skytrax World Airline Awards, and retained the title the following year.

In October 2011, Qatar Airways saw another key milestone by taking delivery of its 100th aircraft, and it has continued to grow its fleet to 127 passenger and cargo aircraft in 2013. There are orders for over 250 aircraft worth more than US$50 billion to come into service in the coming years.

The airline is a very big employer today, with over 28,000 staff worldwide, of which 16,000 are airline employees. There are over 120 different nationalities among the cabin crew.
