Our customer is a world leader in the manufacture of composite & metallic components to the Aerospace Industry, with an unrivalled reach into both civil & military aircraft markets.
Due to a period of significant expansion they are seeking to appoint a Chief Materials Engineer to their operation based off of the South Coast of the UK.
Description
This is the leadership role within the Materials and NDT functions of the business and holds management responsibility for the Materials Laboratory, Thermal Surveys, On-receipt Test, Calibration Department and Thermocouple department.
Core responsibilities of the role include acting as the technical authority for all matters relating to NDT, providing technical control of all NDT methods used and ensuring continued certification of personnel.
You will be the key liaison on technical materials issues with customers, suppliers and regulatory authorities Required to ensure that Thermal Surveys are undertaken and all plant/tooling is compliant, your team will ensure that On-Receipt Testing is carried out in a timely manner and any issues highlighted: that the company's Calibration Department operates in accordance with prescribed procedures (including the Periodic Review) and all tools/plant remains is in calibration and will ensure that the Materials Laboratory has adequate facilities and is compliant to the appropriate Health & Safety legislation Critically you will develop appropriate, standards, techniques carry out required audits and certify other personnel. In this key leadership role for the business you will also play an important role in supporting commercial bids and design reviews as well as advising on design for manufacture The successful incumbent will have exceptional expertise in the Aerostructures industry, including leading edge material and process development knowledge, you must be an experienced senior engineering materials specialist, who can demonstrate a good level of technical application in the composites and/or metallic's field.
Holding a materials related qualification to degree level along or equivalent, with an NDT specific qualification and strong engineering background, you should also be used to working in a project environment and have excellent people management, leadership and motivational skills.
The breadth and influence of this role requires someone high in intellect, able to juggle abstract and practical concepts in tandem and the ability to engage with and influence stakeholders from suppliers through customers, internal partners and regulatory authorities.
Experience, Skills & Experience.
A qualified Materials and/or Process Engineer with HND/HND level qualification or equivalent
Membership of a relevant Professional Body
Expertise gained within an aerospace environment ideally with aerostructures experience - composite and or metallics, ideal preference is to composites as full training will be given on metallics.
Proven track record in interpreting customer quality and design requirements
Thorough understanding of regulatory authority requirements
Expertise in Lean Principles
Expertise in developing appropriate NDT techniques/specimens
Experience in approving NDT Techniques (Internally/externally)
Qualified in administration of NADCAP for NDT
Able to accurately identify Capital requirements
Has the experience to act as Technical Authority on all NDT matters
Able to train / Certify NDT Operatives / Technicians
Previous experience in advising on Design for Manufacture
Used to supporting the business on Bid/Estimate / Design reviews.
