Job Description

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Stress Engineer to join a leading aviation organization. Based in Bristol this position is offering a salary of £30-40k.

The successful Stress Engineer is required to execute stress analysis in support of Engineering project requirements for wing related civil & military aerospace products and their components and in support of the development of existing and new products/structures.

Key Accountabilities
To develop technical solutions which are compliant with all relevant requirements, within agreed programs, timescales and manufacturing constraints.
To ensure design compliance by applying classical methods of analysis in accordance with company internal policies, procedures and work instructions.
To work in co-operation with other functional areas of the company to achieve local and overall business objectives.
To provide solutions to meet airworthiness standards and design approvals
To provide concession support to existing and future production platforms
Experience in metallic and/or composite aero structures
Experience in Damage, Fatigue & Tolerance (FD&T) based theories and activities.
To develop test plans and processes in line with customer, company and industry requirements in order to ensure the acceptability of both materials and finished product
To assist Chief Engineers in delivering Stress projects to completion on time, within budget and to the agreed technical requirements.
To identify and implement Lean initiatives and to encourage a culture of Continuous Improvement within the Engineering function.
To supplement the capabilities and capacity of the Stress Office by identifying work packages suitable for off-load to external suppliers.
Assure the structural integrity of designs by appropriate static stress analysis and fatigue stress analysis
Assist in the selection of appropriate materials and manufacturing technology
Produce structural or systems documentation including requirements specifications, safety documentation, qualification reports, stress reports and STRs.
Assist in ensuring that designs are cost effective using appropriate techniques such as design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA) and design to cost
The role encompass ab initio and modification design and qualification, production support to airframe manufacture and post-design activities



Skills / Experience
BSc or HND in Mechanical, Aerospace, Aeronautical Engineering or relevant subject
Health and Safety Awareness
B/QMS Awareness
Knowledge and experience in the design, development and qualification of airframes and vehicle systems, including:
Good knowledge of airframe static stress analysis techniques including hand calculation methods (including the use of Mathcad), finite element techniques (especially Nastran and Patran), derivation of material and component allowables (including the use of statistical techniques);
Good knowledge of airframe fatigue substantiation including safe life and fracture mechanics techniques;
A good knowledge of the overall static structural substantiation process from definition of external loads through airframe finite element analysis to final check stress clearance;
A knowledge of the overall fatigue substantiation process from the derivation of component mean and working strengths, flight data gathering of fatigue loads, through fatigue life calculation methods to in-service aircraft monitoring;
A knowledge of the relevant airworthiness requirements related to airframes
Broad knowledge of the drawing and design processes used within the company including WINDCHILL
Broad knowledge of the manufacturing processes used to produce different airframe configurations
Structural testing methods and results interpretation.
Ability to prepare clear concise documentation
Familiarisation with local work instructions
Ability to work effectively within a team
Be able to work to an agreed time scale
Resolve problems independently wherever possible and make basic technical decisions
The ability to communicate clearly and effectively
Ability to follow well defined engineering processes.
