Job Description

Outline Job Profile (to include main duties and responsibilities, attach supplementary details if appropriate)

We are looking for someone who can do both detailed stress analysis (using hand calculations) and FE modelling, with good metallic lightweight structure experience. The work is on spacecraft platform structure.

1. To identify all strength and stiffness requirements and ensure that they are valid.
2. To perform all structural analysis necessary to ensure that all strength and stiffness requirements are met with a minimum mass design.
3. To provide a detailed definition of all structural testing required to verify that the strength and stiffness requirements are met.
4. To monitor these tests and write a test assessment report that demonstrates that requirements have been met and that the pretest analysis was of sufficient accuracy.
5. To ensure that the design incorporates all features necessary to meet the strength and stiffness requirements
6. To be conversant with and to apply as appropriate, analysis techniques and methods for light weight structures strength and stiffness prediction that are generally common to aircraft structures analysis. These will include classical hand analysis and computer techniques including the use of the industry standard NASTRAN finite element programme with FEMAP (or possibly PATRAN) and other pre and post processing software.
7. Write clear and concise strength summary reports demonstrating adequate strength margins for all significant possible modes of failure. Write other associated analysis documentation.
8. To present strength and stiffness analyses and test requirements and assessments at formal design reviews.
9. Provide design support to manufacture to ensure that strength and stiffness requirements are met for all non-conformances to design with appropriate corrective action.

Qualifications and/or Skills
Essential: Degree or equivalent in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering.
MSC NASTRAN.

Desirable: MathCAD, FEMAP

Previous Experience
Essential: demonstrable experience in Aerospace particularly lightweight metallic structures engineering / detailed stress. Experience of detailed stress analysis via FE Modelling and Hand Calcs
Desirable: Experience of Composites. Previous aerospace design experience
