Job Description
Purpose of the Job
A design engineer, reporting to either a Senior Design Engineer or Lead Engineer is responsible for the delivery of engineering designs and drawings, which meet the requirements defined by their task leader, whilst at the same time ensuring that the completed work package incorporates best practice in all areas.

This role reports directly to the Engineering Manager for the Structures Business

Key Responsibilities
- § Responsible for the design and detail modelling of a variety of suite components in order to meet the programme requirements
- § Cost and weight targets must be managed and met
- § Design engineers will be expected to communicate effectively and professionally with customers and suppliers.
- § Participate in Design Reviews throughout each phase of the New Product Introduction process
- § The selection and application of materials and processes appropriate to each design element
- § Ensure the successful integration of each design element with the product as a whole
- § Follow and contribute to the development of the Best Practice guidelines as laid out in Quality documentation
- § To check engineering packages
- § Generate and/or revise specifications
- § From time to time, Design engineers must be prepared to undertake other tasks as requested by their immediate supervisors.
- § Participate in the validation of the product (using such methods as prototyping, test, DFMEA)
- § Any other reasonable duties
Hours of Work
39 hours per week - Semi Flexible
Core hours Monday to Thursday, 09.00 to 16.30.
Core hours Fridays, 09.00 to 12.30.
Additional 7.5 flexible hours to be worked each week.
Flexible hours can be worked Monday to Wednesday between:
07.30 to 09.00
16.30 to 18.00
Flexible hours can be worked on Thursday between:
07.30 to 09.00
16.30 to 19.00
Flexible hours can be worked on Friday between:
07.30 and 09.00
12.30 and 14.00
Holiday Entitlement
25 days plus B/Holidays
Travel %
10% dependant upon business needs
Educational Requirements
- § Engineering degree or ONC/HNC in design related field and proven related experience
Knowledge / Experience
- § Effective oral and written communication skills
- § Good team working skills
- § The ability to work with a low level of supervision and intervention
- § Willing to travel to support company objectives
- § Good working ethic
- § Driving Licence
Technical Skills / Competencies
- Sufficient engineering capability and experience to create effective engineered solutions
- Competent user of the incumbent CAD and data management systems
- A working knowledge of the various methods of manufacture to be employed such as:
- Machining
- Casting
- Vacuum forming
- Injection moulding
- Composite materials
- Trim and finish
- An understanding of the selection of appropriate hardware (fasteners etc)
- A good understanding of the manufacturing capabilities and limitations of MU
- A good understanding of the methods of assembly employed by Operations
- An understanding of the effective application of tolerances and G D & T
- An understanding of material selection
- An understanding of protective treatments
- An understanding of aircraft interior architecture with a working knowledge of Boeing,
- Airbus requirements
- An understanding of the best practice for the integration of mechanical and electrical systems
- Familiarity with company procedures and best practices
- Awareness of the certification framework within which the work is undertaken
- A good working knowledge of the companies change control process
- A good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook
