Job Description

Our customer is a leading name in Composite Manufacturing.

Due to a period of significant growth they are seeking to appoint an Intellectual Property Engineer for their South Coast based operation.

JOB PURPOSE

Responsible for:

Supporting Intellectual Property related activities across all of the company Aerospace Technology Function.

Manage Monitoring of 3rd Party Patents: Competitor watches, Technology Mapping, and patent avoidance activities

Assist in the managing of the company Aerospace Patent Portfolio

Support Intellectual Property aspects of entry into new contracts including acquisitions, collaborative projects, development agreements, and partnerships/joint ventures.

KEY FIGURES / DIMENSIONS

  1. Receive and process all new invention disclosure forms for geographic area of responsibility; supporting inventors where necessary; checking for completeness and entering into appropriate database/Excel spreadsheet / in future new database ; advising upon ancillary ownership questions;
  2. Ensure timely review of inventions to authorise filings; dealing with ancillary issues relating to invention and instruct local external attorneys;
  1. Facilitate Local Patent Meetings and Patent Section of Engineering Council Meetings and ensure implementation of decisions made at such meeting;
  1. Assist in Managing Case Prosecution (patent or design application through to grant/registration) and relationship with external patent attorneys;
  1. Carry out specific subject matter reviews - on specific technologies, as requested by engineers. ( to cover company patents/competitor patents and commercial position)

Support subject matter searches carried out by engineers and/or personally carry out subject matter searches on an ad hoc basis on specific subjects identified as of interest;

Review search results and prepare reports/presentations in useful format for engineering community.

  1. Provide Search support to engineers including carrying out searches, training and supporting engineers in their own searches and identifying when external searchers need to be utilised; review search results and advise upon implications.

Provide training for engineers on how to use external search engines and identify those types of searches which engineers should attempt themselves;

Provide telephone and ad hoc advice to engineers on search techniques;

Provide support for engineers in analysing relevance of information found in searches and identify where external attorneys advice is required.

  1. Patent Review - support engineers in carrying out specific patent reviews carried out in relation to products under development; identify issues to be raised at Engineering Council Meeting and then to be raised to Executive Review; and monitor Patent Review status of products in development.

Attend brainstorming meetings of engineering teams to support identification of potentially patentable features of new products; and attend meetings for discussion of search results and issues arising;

Instruct external patent attorneys in relation to all issues arising;

Review searches carried out by engineering team and identify further search requirements, either to be carried out by Patent Manager personally or to be carried out by external patent search agencies;

Check reporting matrices with [Product Group Leader] and review actions required/recommended;

Chair discussion of Patent Review results within Engineering Council and identify and support presentation of such results to Executive Review as necessary.

Regularly check status of Patent Reviews in progress in relation to all current and planned products and report on issues arising to Patent Committee and where necessary to Executive Review.

  1. Provide Patent Bulletins to appropriate engineers to alert them of relevant patents and patent applications being published in their field of interest.

Work with Engineers to ensure correct identification of technical fields to be monitored for competitor activity and of Competitors whose patent activity is to be monitored; identify the responsible engineer to receive information and review relevance to company activity.
