Synthetic Environments Engineer
Job Description
- To provide a modelling and simulation capability that supports the needs of the business.
Key Responsibility Areas
- Participate in developing, maintaining and modifying engineering processes and procedures in assigned areas in response to technical developments and operational need.
- Carry out technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems.
- Prepare specifications and develop designs in line with specifications and all quality and technical standards.
- Carry out investigations into a full range of problems, issues or developments and develop and prepare solutions, individually or as a member of a project team.
- Define testing approaches and specify tests in assigned/specialist area(s) and evaluate and make recommendations based on results, including making suggestions to improve test/diagnosis processes.
- Provide effective support to customers in assigned areas, delivering solutions to meet the customers' needs and requirements.
- Deliver solutions to time and budget constraints.
- Keep up to date in relevant technical areas, develop skills and capabilities to be able to provide more effective services (seeking and sharing good practice and knowledge to continuously improve practices), and supply technical support and expertise to others as required.
- Make engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Relevant engineering, computer science, maths or science degree - or equivalent
TECHNICAL SKILLS
The applicant should be an expert in the following areas, with at least 5 years of experience:
- C, C++, and C#
- Networking & Networking Protocols
The applicant should be proficient in the following areas, with at least 5 years of experience:
- DIS & HLA Simulation Protocol
- Federated (including Distributed) simulations
- Simulation Development Processes (e.g. DSEEP)
- Real-Time Software Development
- Interoperability
- Use and development of CGFs, particularly VR Forces, VBS2, OneSAF
- Visualisation Programming: DirectX, OpenGL, Graphics/Games Engines
The applicant should be competent in the following areas:
- HLA Evolved and TENA Simulation Protocols
- Military Communications & Datalinks
- JAVA .NET, SQL, UML
It would be beneficial if the applicant had experience in the following areas:
- MOD SE Towers or other similar research programmes

- Good verbal and written communication skills.

- Able to work on own initiative & as part of a team.
- A flexible and adaptable approach.
- Highly motivated
- Able to interact with internal and external customers
Intrinsic Job Factors
- This is a predominantly office based role using display screen equipment working full time hours which can often be in a demanding environment.
- As part of this role the successful candidates will be expected to travel possibly both in the UK and abroad to support customer meetings or trials and demonstration activities, you will also be expected to stay overnight as part of this travel.
- Working to tight deadlines either on a regular or ad hoc basis will be required.
