Aircraft fitters are crucial cogs in the wider engineering team, and without them, no aircraft would leave the ground. Fitters are employed in aircraft maintenance and assembly; installing modification kits, electrical harnesses and panels in accordance with technical drawings, as well as the confirmation and verification of inspection.
Aircraft fitters are increasingly using composite materials and so many jobs are described as composite fitter technicians, or composite engineers. Maintenance work is typically carried out within Base Maintenance departments
Aircraft fitter is a highly technical role, and as a result applicants will need to have completed an engineering qualification or aerospace apprenticeship (or military equivalent) and it may help to have clocked up some experience as a fully trained aircraft fitter.
The work of an aircraft fitter focuses on aircraft manufacturing or structural repair. Experience of using drills, rivet guns, and specialist precision tools will be expected, as well as a full understanding of precision technical plans and blueprints.
Requirements for aircraft fitter jobs vary, as aerospace engineering organizations need mechanical aircraft fitters to work on specific aircraft types. This could include a comprehensive knowledge of rotary machines, mechanical and electrical equipment, and the ability to work to technical drawings, while adhering to aerospace quality principles.
Work is often contractual and there are many opportunities for self-employed aircraft fitters. Often pay is by the hour, and ranges from £14 to £40 an hour. For permanent aircraft fitter roles the salary will be in the region of £20,000 to £40,000 pa.
