BA Chief turns down bonus

Willie Walsh, the chief executive of British Airways, has turned down a £334,000 bonus, but his performance-related pay could rise this year if he can improve the industrial relations of the strike-hit airline.

For the third consecutive year, Mr Walsh declined to take a bonus as BA slumped to a record loss of £531 million.

Two years ago it was the botched opening of Heathrow’s Terminal 5 that led to Mr Walsh waiving a bonus worth potentially £625,000.

He turned down a bonus worth up to £550,000 last year after BA lost Read more »

Emirates places super order for super jets

Emirates has placed what it claims is the largest single order for aircraft by ordering 32 Airbus 380 jets.

The buying spree would cost around $11 billion at the going rate of $346.5m a plane (although one assumes a bulk discount will be on the cards) and will mean the Middle Eastern carrier will have 90 planes.

Delivery date is 2017.

The bold order is a sign of chief executive Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum’s confidence in his airline’s growth. This year it anticipates earning $1.16 billion.

British Airways cabin crew to meet MPs

British Airways cabin crew will meet MPs later as they enter the penultimate day of the last of a series of five-day walkouts.

They will tell MPs how the airline is currently gripped by a “climate of fear”, reports suggest.

On Monday, BA boss Willie Walsh said he would hold out against the striking cabin crew “for as long it takes”.

“I don’t think we’ve been brave enough in the past to stand up and say ‘no’,” he said at a conference in Germany.

Mr Walsh said the airline would continue to focus on building up the number of flights it runs during the strike.

BA cabin crew are entering their 21st day of strike action this year, with the latest five-day action due to end on Wednesday.

The Unite union, which represents the striking crew, has threatened to hold a fresh ballot among its members on further strike action, which could disrupt flights during the summer.

The long-running dispute is over pay, staffing levels and working conditions.
